Studies conducted to determine the feasibility of renovating an existing building concluded it was inadequate to serve the needs of the Water District. A new 12,000 square foot building was designed and built which expanded the administrative functions and added new laboratory facilities and a new maintenance bay with a 5-ton bridge crane. Nine equipment buildings were also designed and built on the site.
Located near San Francisco Bay, the buildings were placed on thick concrete pads which sit over concrete piers. Chemical resistant materials and high performance coatings were used in this design. The city of South San Francisco mandated the use of a wood framed roof to bring down the cost of the project.
